If a caries gets too big and reaches the nerve, the tooth gets infected and, finally, there’s the necrosis of the nerve (the nerve dies). Most of times (not always) there is a lot of pain associated with the infection. In order to save the tooth, we should remove the nerve and clean thoroughly the canal. This is called root canal treatment or endodontic treatment.
